Hey mama,
If you’ve ever laid in bed wondering, “Did I do enough today?” — you’re not alone.
We’ve all had those days where we feel like we missed the mark, lost our patience, or just ran out of energy before we could make a moment count.
But here’s the sweet truth: our kids don’t need extravagant vacations or Pinterest-worthy activities to feel loved. They need to feel seen.
They need connection — and that often comes in the simplest forms.
Below are 20 memory-making activities you can do with your children. 10 are completely free, and 10 cost less than $30. They’re simple, doable, and rooted in what really matters: being present.
Candlelit Dinner or Hot Chocolate
Turn off the lights, light some candles, and let the magic begin. Whether it’s a fancy dinner or just grilled cheese, the candlelight makes everything feel special. Bonus points if you serve hot chocolate in mugs with extra marshmallows and cozy up afterward.
Backyard Picnic
Even if it’s just sandwiches and chips, laying out a blanket outside turns a regular meal into an adventure.
Build a Blanket Fort + Movie Night
Let the kids be in charge of construction — chairs, blankets, pillows, the works. Then snuggle inside with popcorn and a movie. It’s cozy, chaotic, and completely magical in the eyes of a child.
Family Game Night
You don’t need a fancy collection. Even Go Fish or Uno can turn into a night of belly laughs and inside jokes. Let the kids choose the game — and maybe even make up their own rules.
Would You Rather? Game
This is a dinner table favorite: “Would you rather have spaghetti for hair or waffles for feet?” Silly, easy, and guaranteed to get everyone giggling. Make it a regular thing!
Nature Bracelets
Wrap tape (sticky side out) around their wrists and go outside to “collect” nature. Flowers, leaves, blades of grass — whatever they find, they stick it on. It’s crafting, exploring, and sensory play all in one.
Dance Party in the Living Room
Clear some space, crank up their favorite songs, and just let loose. It doesn’t matter what the moves look like — only that you’re doing them together. Let them DJ. No rules — just music and movement.
Let Them Choose Dinner
Give them three meal options and let them pick. Better yet, let them help cook! Measuring, stirring, and plating might take longer, but the confidence and pride on their face? Worth every second.
Stargazing Night
As a homeschool mom I LOVE this one. Lay out on a blanket and look up. Talk about the stars, make up constellations, or download an app to identify real ones. It’s peaceful and wonder-filled — and opens the door for the best kinds of conversations.
Scavenger Hunt Walk
Create a quick list: something red, something round, something that smells good. Take a walk together and let them hunt. Add stickers or a small prize if you want, but the exploring is the reward.
Ice Cream Date
Rather it’s a quick trip to sonic for their favorite milkshake, or you head into Walmart to let them pick out their ice cream and ALL the toppings – this one is always a hit!
Dollar Store Adventure
Give them $5 and let them go wild. Watching what they pick (and how seriously they take it!) is half the fun. And they’ll be so proud of their little treasures. A sticker book and some new crayons is the best thing if you ask my girls!
Buy a New Board Game or Puzzle
Let them pick something new — even if it’s silly or messy. The excitement of unboxing it together and learning the rules is a memory in itself. Add snacks and you’ve got a Friday night ritual in the making.
Mini Canvas Paint Night
Grab $1-$3 canvases and paints from a craft store and create together. Yes, this may be messy. But, it’s the perfect opportunity to make a little keepsake! You can do handprints, footprints, fingerprints, and more. Make sure to put the date on the back once everyone is done. After a few of these, you’ll have enough art to make your own personal art gallery. Take it to the next level by inviting family over for a viewing!
Bake Something Sweet
Whether it’s break-and-bake cookies or homemade cupcakes, this is an instant win. Kids love helping in the kitchen, especially when they know they’ll get to taste the results.
Visit a Local Farmer’s Market or Plant Nursery
Let your child pick out a small plant, flower, or veggie to grow. Many nurseries have $2 starter plants or succulents, and farmer’s markets offer fresh produce, homemade treats, or handmade goodies. Walk, talk, sample, and let them lead. It’s a chance to slow down and experience your town in a new way — with fresh air and fresh connection.
Bowling Night
I have a whole blog on things to do in Daphne, AL and guess what – bowling is on it. Read that blog here: Things to Do in Daphne, Alabama
Make-Your-Own Pizza Night
Buy pre-made dough or flatbreads, set out sauce and toppings, and let everyone build their own pie. It’s messy, delicious, and perfect for picky eaters who like control over dinner.
Matching Tie-dye Tees
Pick up plain white tees and a tie-dye kit from Walmart or Michaels. It’s an outdoor-friendly craft that gets bonus points for wearable memories. Take a group photo when you’re done!
Mom & Me Photoshoot
This one is so popular for the girl moms. Go grab yall some super cute and matching outfits, first and foremost. Then. set your phone up to record a video. Make sure you guys are perfectly in the frame, and then just be together. As the phone records you take a moment to soak in your littles. Brush their hair back, tickle their necks, give them eskimo kisses, and crack some silly jokes. After 3-5 minutes, stop the video and then take a screenshot of every perfect frame you see. Ta-da – you’re not a photographer! But now hear me out — this one might technically cost a little more than $30, but what if you hired a photographer?! Better yet, what if you hired me?! When you factor in how long these memories last it practically pays for itself.
Girl math says: one photo session that turns into framed prints, heirlooms, and reminders of just how much love you share = a total steal.
You’re usually behind the camera, mama. Let’s change that.
Mama, you don’t need a cleared to-do list or a big budget to be everything your child needs. You’re already doing so much by simply showing up — and these tiny moments?
They’re the ones they’ll hold on to forever.
And if you’re ready to capture these seasons through beautiful, meaningful portraits — I’m here when you’re ready.
Because you deserve to be in the frame, too. 💛
