What To Expect: Maternity Session with Deep Roots Photography

An expecting mom photographed in a pink tulle dress, who may be considering hiring a Midwife in Mobile, AL

So, you’ve booked a maternity session with Deep Roots Photography?

WAY TO GO, MAMA! That is the first step toward celebrating the incredible transformation your body is going through. This season—though it may feel long some days—is fleeting in the grand story of motherhood. And I promise, these portraits will serve as timeless reminders of your strength, beauty, and love.

Before we go any further, let me say a big THANK YOU. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of such a personal, empowering journey. It is truly an honor to photograph this chapter of your life.

What to Expect — And Why You Don’t Need to Stress

Take a deep breath, mama—I’ve got you.

I’ll guide you through everything from posing to wardrobe, and we’ll create images that reflect your personality, your beauty, and your story. Whether you want bold and dramatic, soft and intimate, or something with major goddess vibes, I’ll help bring your vision to life.

All I ask is that you fill out the maternity questionnaire (if you haven’t already). It helps me tailor everything to you. Don’t see it in your inbox? Just reach out and I’ll resend it.

What to bring

We’ll aim for 3 outfit changes to give your gallery variety and depth—but remember, I have a full client closet, so don’t feel like you need to go on a shopping spree unless you want to.

Let’s walk through some helpful things to have on hand:

For You:

1. Nude Bra and Panty Set

A nude set provides a seamless look under light or sheer outfits, ensuring no visible lines or distractions in your photos.

  • see shopping link below

2. Black Bra and Panty Set

A black set adds a touch of sophistication and works well under darker outfits or for more dramatic looks.

3. Strapless Bra

Ideal for off-shoulder or strapless dresses, ensuring support without visible straps.

4. Maternity Shapewear

Helps smooth out lines and offers gentle support to your growing belly, enhancing the fit of your outfits!

5. Pasties

Useful for outfits where a bra isn’t suitable, ensuring modesty and comfort. This is one you don’t have to have, but the majority of my clients feel a touch more confident and comfortable when they wear them, versus being bare-breasted.

6. String Thongs

This is an absolute necessity if you plan to pose nude or “implied” nude! These are my go to for providing you with coverage, while creating those gorgeous, sleek, smooth nude portraits.

7. Jeans

I won’t provide a link for this one, as everyone has different body shapes and different preferences on jeans. The best jeans to choose are those that flatter your form, highlight your bump, and can be posed in easily. Here’s a breakdown of ideal style and fit options:

  • Style:
    • Low-Rise or Under-Belly Maternity Jeans
      • Keeps your bump fully visible in cropped tops or bras.
      • Best for editorial shots that show the belly or play with contrast between structured denim and soft skin.
      • Avoid: Over-the-bump styles unless you plan to wear a shirt over them.
    • Slim-Fit or Skinny Jean
      • Hug your curves and create a streamlined silhouette
      • Look polished and pairs beautifully with oversized blazers, bralettes, and  dramatic lighting.
      • Great for high-fashion/editorial vibes.
    • Straight-Leg or Boyfriend Jean
      • Slightly relaxed, they add a casual-chic element.
      • Ideal when styled with a structured top, button-down shirt, or bandeau for contrast.
      • We can roll the cuffs for added interest.
    • Distressed or Lightly Ripped Jeans
      • Add a touch of edge and modern flair.
      • Excellent for black-and-white and/or moody studio portaits.
  • Fit & Color:
    • Fitted Through the Hips and Thigh
    • This keeps your figure looking intentional and not bulky on camera.

Additional tips for choosing your jeans:

  • The Unbuttoned Look: I love styling jeans unzipped and folded down to frame the bump artistically—so consider a pair that looks good partially open.

  • Stretchy Material: Comfort is still key. Look for jeans with stretch so you can pose freely.

  • No Big Logos or Embellishments: Simplicity keeps it classy!

8. Stylized Bra or Crop Top

For more stylized or intimate shots, a fashionable bra or crop top can serve as a statement piece. You may not need to buy a bra, as you may decide to use your nude or black one that you have picked out previously in this list. If you do decide to get something else to add more variety into your gallery, consider adding texture and details by purchasing something similar to the items listed here:

Don’t worry if this feels overwhelming—I have a full client closet with options you’re welcome to use, and I’ll help you pair pieces together. The planning stage should be one of the most exciting times of your session. I look forward to chatting, and sending links back and forth as we work together to figure out exactly what works best to match your vision for this special milestone.

What to bring for your spouse

Yes, this session is about you—but your partner is an important part of your story, too.

Here are some things your spouse should bring:

  • Neutral fitted shirt (black, white, cream, or grey)

  • Solid black or dark jeans

  • Khakis, slacks, or dress pants if preferred

  • Undershirt or tank if planning skin-to-skin

  • Comfortable shoes (or prepare to go barefoot!)

I usually incorporate partner poses scattered throughout the entire session, so it’s best if he plans to stick around for the full experience. If he needs to go before you are done, please try to let me know ahead of time so I can make sure I get him into plenty of portraits before leaving.

What to expect with siblings / full family photos

Yesss, let’s capture your growing family in all its sweetness! These images often turn out to be mom’s favorite ones. There’s something so beautiful about capturing your growing family just as it is, before a new baby joins the mix.

We’ll start with family photos first, while everyone is fresh and happy. I’ll guide your kiddos into sweet, natural poses—think hugs, belly kisses, and giggles.

Here’s a tip: After we finish sibling and family photos, please make arrangements for someone to take the children home (if possible). This will allow us to focus on you for the rest of the session. It also helps maintain a calm environment, which makes a big difference in the vibe of your portraits.

If that’s not an option, no worries! Just be sure to bring quiet toys, snacks, or a screen to help keep them entertained during your solo portion.

During your session

Your comfort is my top priority. Maternity sessions are paced gently, with breaks for water, outfit changes, or just catching your breath.

We’ll start with a more natural look and ease into bolder or more styled poses as your confidence builds—most mamas tell me they feel like a model by the end of it!

Don’t forget to hydrate and eat before your session. A well-fed mama = more energy and a glowing look on camera.

Studio details

The session will take place in my private studio, located behind my home. For safety, the address is not posted publicly, but it will be sent to you via text or email. If you need it again, just reach out!

Please plan to arrive about 5 minutes early so we can get started on time and make the most of our scheduled session.

Final thoughts

You are growing life inside of you—how incredible is that?! This session is about honoring your body and your strength. Whether you feel glowing or just…tired (I get it, I’ve been there), I promise you’ll walk out of the studio feeling empowered and beautiful.

Let’s make art that will live on in albums, on walls, and in your heart.
