Fairhope Pediatric Dentist: Oral Tie Corrections

I take pride in providing my mama clients with valuable information and connections. Being a mom is such a wonderful blessing, but it’s so much more than just “being mom”. As a mom you are also a chef, a chauffer, a maid, a teacher, a coordinator, a nurse and so many other crucial responsibilities. That is why I try my best to provide connections to you! Finding and researching professionals your child may need to see can feel daunting, but I’m here to relieve some of that stress. Today, I am here to introduce a Fairhope Pediatric Dentist.

Dr. Williams isn’t only a pediatric dentist. He is also a family dentist, and provides a variety of services to those in the Fairhope, AL area. However, the focus of this blog will be on his oral tie corrections for infants. I have seen first hand the difference Dr. Williams can make in an infant’s life, along with his mama’s life. I just recently recommended a photography client to reach out to Dr. Williams after she voiced concerns about a possible tongue tie, and she was sure to let me know afterwards just how great he was and how fantastic the whole experience was!

What is a tongue tie?

While I am not a medical professional, I am a mother and I have a child who had a tie as an infant. Unfortunately, I met Dr. Williams once my child was a toddler and no longer needed the correction. However, I did do research about it and I’d like to share that information, collectively, with you.

A tongue tie, according to the Mayo Clinic, is a condition present at birth that causes restrictions in the movement of the tongue. Other types of oral ties include lips ties and buccal ties (a restriction inside the cheeks)

Symptoms of oral ties

A tongue tie, and other oral ties, can cause a list of symptoms and issues in infants, and you if you are breastfeeding. While I won’t list the extensive list, I will share with you the most common symptoms I have seen. They include:

  • Difficulty latching
  • Inability to transfer milk
  • Clicking noises as the baby suckles the breast
  • Gassiness
  • Colic
  • Overall discomfort for you as a breastfeeding mother, including bleeding nipples and engorgement following a nursing session.
  • Decreased milk supply caused from poor milk transfer.

For your convenience, I’ve provided a link to the Mayo Clinic at the bottom of this page which discusses symptoms and when to seek medical attention. Please note, not all oral ties need correction! If you are unsure if your child has one, or it needs correction, Dr. Williams is the go-to Fairhope Pediatric Dentist for your questions and concerns.

Oral Tie Laser Corrections

There are two ways to correct an oral tie – with scissors or with a laser. Both sound scary, right? Personally, the thought of either of those options petrified me as a mother. It wasn’t until I met Dr. Williams that I learned the benefits of correction and why a frenectomy procedure is the better wat to go.

Laser Correction Benefits

Since Dr. Williams uses laser correction, I am going to focus on the benefits of the laser. The benefits include:

  • Quick procedure
  • Faster recovery
  • Minimized discomfort
  • Omits anesthesia
